I. About
Gabriel Vergelin Soler with cello

Who I Am

Gabriel Vergelin Soler

I grew up in Argentina, where I started playing the cello at the age of eight with Raul Venturini. His lessons were three hours away from home, so every week we made the long round trip together. That rhythm shaped my early years.

At twenty-one I moved to Switzerland to continue my studies, and I've been based in Bern ever since. On stage I enjoy switching between two worlds: playing solo with a loop station - layering bass, percussion, and melody live on the cello - and performing with my regular bands, Vol au Vent, Das Seltene Orchester, and ChiflaPacu, an Argentine folklore group here in Switzerland.

When I'm not performing or in the studio, I teach cello and ukulele to students from six years old up to master level, in five languages. I also teach chess - it's become another real passion of mine.

III. Background
Gabriel playing cello

Creativity is built on technical precision.

Before I was a teenager I was already performing with the Córdoba Youth Symphony Orchestra. Years later I moved to Switzerland and studied Jazz Cello at the Bern University of the Arts (HKB), where I completed both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees. My playing was strongly shaped by working with Stephan Braun, Vincent Segal, Ernst Reijseger, Rushad Eggleston, and Martin Meléndez.

Since then I've performed at the Cully Jazz Festival, collaborated with Dida Guigan and Chloé Levaillant, and worked as music director for several theatre productions, writing and performing with both cello and piano.

Marco Mezquida Jazz Pianist, Spain

"What strikes me about Gabriel is how he dives right into making music with everybody and anybody around him, no matter what the genre or style is."

Adam Henley Folk Guitarist, Boston

Schlosskonzerte Thun Festival

"I really like the way Gabriel teaches. The lessons are varied and I can even choose the topics of the lessons sometimes. He has a very challenging but motivating way of teaching. Gabriel always brings new ideas of what we can play or what would be nice to learn. He shows me new and very creative ways of playing the cello."

Nathalie 32, Lehrperson, Bern
